 POTY Winners 2014 2015

At the Gulbenkian Theatre on National Poetry Day, 8 October, the Canterbury Festival Poet of the Year and winner of the University of Kent Prize was named as Abegail Morley from Cranbrook for her poem Occupied (click to read). Judge Sonia Overall said of the poem “It draws a poignant character study of both the poem’s narrator and its subject, with images of such clarity they linger long between readings.” Abegail received a cheque for £200.00 and half a case of wine. Second place (£100.00) went to Jacqueline Haskell from Hampshire and third (£50.00) was Rachel Plummer of Edinburgh.

Two additional prizes were awarded; a bottle of sparkling wine for the ‘Best Read Poem’ of the evening which went to local poet Rosey Wilkin from Wye for Rib Hip which also received a special commendation from the judges, and the ‘People’s Choice’ (£25.00), the favourite poem of the audience on the night, went to Roger James of Tonbridge for his poem Yosemite.

This is the first year that the Awards Evening has been held in the Gulbenkian Theatre courtesy of the Competition’s splendid new supporter, the School of English at the University of Kent who have also, very generously, increased the value of the prizes. As part of the new-look Awards Evening, an Open Mic session was included allowing 10 people to get up onto the stage and read their poems.

The Poet of the Year Competition is now in its ninth year and has proved a remarkable success for the Friends of Canterbury Festival who organise it. Each year more entries are received; 279 this year from all over the globe, and the Awards Evening is now seen as the opening salvo of the Canterbury Festival.

The Poet of the Year Competition 2016 will be launched in March so all poets and potential poets should watch out for details on the Festival Website.
