Canterbury Festival is Kent’s International Arts Festival, and hosts some of the greatest musicians, actors and artists from around the globe during its two week run. Made in Kent will look to East Kent’s local talent to discover the very finest representatives of each of the genres (music, theatre, comedy, visual art and literature) and provide opportunities for them to both develop their skills and take part in the Canterbury Festival 2015 alongside the international programme. Each strand will consist of a competition open to the general public with a different component announced monthly in the lead up to the Festival’s programme launch in June. The competition guidelines will be available on www.canterburyfestival.co.uk

January 2015 sees the launch of this year’s Festival Foundation’s Young Musicians’ Bursary Competition. This popular competition is now in its fifth year and provides excellent support to talented young musicians from East Kent. The competition has two categories, the Juniors covering 12-14 years and the Seniors covering 15-18 years. Applicants are encouraged to enter with either instrumental or vocal performances. The Senior Bursary winner will benefit from a very generous bursary award as well as becoming an ambassador of the Canterbury Festival and the finalists from the senior section and winner of the junior section will perform at the Foundation Bursary concert during the Festival in October.

Last year’s competition winners were Jessica Meakin a violinist and student at St Edmund’s School and Sabrina Curwen, a singer who studies at Sir Roger Manwood’s School. The standard was so high that the judges couldn’t pick just one winner. Over the course of this year both young musicians will be conducting a number of community workshops and performing in various festival events as Festival Ambassadors.

Deadline for entries is Friday 15 May and short-listing auditions will take place in June. For further details please contact Alison Chambers on 01227 452 853. Information, deadlines and application forms for all competitions will be available at the Festival website.
