The story so far – Thomas Hall, Young Musicians’ Bursary Competition Winner 2022

Since my last update, the past few months have been both exciting and busy! Whilst making the final preparations for my A levels in Music, Further Maths and Physics, I have had some important decisions to make. With offers on the table for all seven institutions I applied for, I elected to attend the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in late January this year. During February, I was honoured to be a featured soloist with the Junior Guildhall Brass Band, at Regent Hall in London, where I performed to a packed auditorium. March brought many more musical experiences including my A level performance on Trombone, a distinction in my Grade 8 singing and a performance with the Junior Guildhall Symphony Orchestra of Khachaturian’s suite from the ballet Spartacus at Milton Court in the Barbican.

At the beginning of April, I attended a week long course with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain which was an amazing experience both socially and musically. I was appointed principal euphonium which is something I’ve always aspired to. The course culminated in two performances in packed concert halls: one in Stoller Hall Manchester and the other in Birmingham with the RM Band Collingwood.

I have been lucky enough to have a piece for brass band and soloist commissioned for me, by a well known composer residing in Canada, and I will be performing the world premiere of this piece in the near future.
